2005 Sanctuary Grants
Mindy's Memory Primate Sanctuary
Newcastle, OK
This sanctuary's goal is to rescue and provide lifetime homes for monkeys who have become homeless
victims of the exotic pet trade and also those who have been used in research facilities.
AAVS was proud to be part of providing new housing for Herpes B positive rhesus macaques who
were surrendered by a university lab in California.
Primarily Primates
San Antonio, TX
AAVS continues to support this growing sanctuary that is home to many chimpanzees and other primates
surrendered by laboratories across the country. In 1996, AAVS helped secure the release of 12
chimpanzees from the Buckshire Corporation in nearby Bucks County, Pa, who were delivered safely
and remain in the daily care of the good people at Primarily Primates.
Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines
Pottstown, PA
AAVS continues to provide support for this beautiful farm in famous Chester County, PA,
that provides a haven of special care for older and abused horses, some of whom have been
involved in the pharmaceutical industry, having been used in the production of snake anti-venom
and other blood components. Ryerss has also rescued dozens of foals who result from the production
of Premarin, a menopausal drug whose name stands for PREgnant MARe urINE. Year after year, Ryerss
has been able to care for and place foals with adoptive families, saving them from slaughter.
The Association of Sanctuaries
Stillwater, MN
AAVS has awarded support for a special project to provide guidance and standards of care for animals in
sanctuaries, many of whom are from laboratories.
Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. (WRR)
Kendalia, TX
AAVS was enormously impressed with this 29 year old organization situated on 187 acres,
whose mission includes providing sanctuary with dignity to many and varied animals, including 90 plus animals
released from laboratories. WRR also engages in rehabilitation and release of orphaned, injured, and displaced wildlife.
