Every year, hundreds of thousands of animals are intentionally infected with or bred to develop
diseases and other ailments and are then killed in research laboratories to investigate the
manifestation and possible treatments of human diseases and maladies such as diabetes, arthritis,
epilepsy, neurological disorders, and cancer, just to name a few. The American Anti-Vivisection Society
opposes the use of animals in biomedical research and has worked for 120 years to end this practice.
As part of our effort to accomplish this mission, AAVS publishes a listing of health charities that do and do not fund animal research.
To ensure that our records are accurate, AAVS requires that all charities to sign on to the Humane Charity Seal of Approval, the highest level
of assurance that a health organization only sponsors non-animal research and/or patient support programs. Established in 2001, the Humane Seal
is administered by the Council on Humane Giving which is managed by a coalition of animal advocacy organizations, including AAVS.
With nearly 250 health charities adopting the Seal, it is clear that it is not necessary to harm animals in order to conduct viable, potentially
life-saving research. Additionally, investigating human disease by utilizing animals is not only ethically irresponsible, but also scientifically
questionable since animal research data cannot be accurately extrapolated to human conditions because of the various physiological and metabolic
differences that exist between species.
You can choose to support charities that do not fund animal research!
